While high-profile tours collapse under the weight of a headliner’s recent mistakes, at least the Boss continues to trudge throught the great American landscape. Only a week after Bruce Springsteen turned 60, he and his E Street Band kicked off their five-night stint at Giants Stadium with a new song paying homage to the institution. Seen above, “Wrecking Ball” poetically recounts the history of the New Jersey landmark but also adds an extra touch of whimsy. For Springsteen, a New Jersey native, the track also parallels a trip down memory lane, expressed in vivid images detailing his own storied career.

That’s not the only treat Springsteen gave me and tens of thousands of other fans last night (pictured), though. He opened the show with a brand-new song, “Wrecking Ball,” penned in tribute to Giants Stadium. “I was raised out of steel here in the swamps of Jersey, some misty years ago,” he began, eliciting loud cheers while strumming an electric guitar alone. As he reached the chorus, Springsteen seemed to be taunting the eroding force of time itself: “Bring on your wrecking ball/Come on, take your best shot/Let me see what you got/Bring on your wrecking ball.” (And was he really just talking about the stadium, or did I detect a more personal note of 60-year-old rock’n’roll defiance in there too?) When the full band kicked in a few moments later, Giants Stadium went wild for one of the last times ever. It was an inspiring start to another of the marathon three-hour shows Springsteen still manages to put on night after night.
These concerts will be last performances ever at the Meadowlands, which will be demolished in 2010 after the NFL calendar has concluded. I hope they play the song on repeat during the demolition.
As previously reported, Built to Spill will release their first album in over three years, There Is No Enemy, on October 6th. In the video posted above, you can listen to an early 2008 live rendition of the song “Hindsight,” which will appear on the album. Now the track is available to the public in all it’s mixed and mastered glory.
Fortunately, we don’t have to wait another three weeks for a taste of the new record thanks to Pitchfork, which just posted the new song “Hindsight.” The verdict? Since BTS is one of a small handful of bands we actually want to jam out past the 8-minute mark, the compact poppiness of “Hindsight” is a slight letdown. Would it kill you guys to insert a noodling guitar solo or two, guys? Of course, if your BTS fandom is based more on Keep It Like A Secret than Perfect From Now On—a perfectly defensible position—”Hindsight” will be right up your alley.

This is how I like my Built to Spill. I don’t care for all the wacky guitar theatrics. I love what they can do with multiple guitar layers, but I prefer the swirling lines built around a solid song, which is what we have in “Hindsight.” I’m definitely looking forward to the new album.

I don’t know how I missed out on this character. In retrospect, it’s understandable. Growing up in the 90s, my first memorable experiences with music were from the albums my dad played around the house, the pop rock radio stations my mom listened to, and bands my friends and I got wind of that we thought were cool. Thus, my tape cassette collection from that period includes everything from the Offspring, Green Day, Weird Al Yankovic, 311, Bush, Boyz II Men, and Mariah Carey. I was all over the place. I could bob my head to the majestic sounds of the Beatles, rock out to Green Day, geek out to Weird Al, and privately sing Boyz II Men with subtle embarrassment. Needless to say, I didn’t have an older brother to show me the way. On that note, one thing I’m sure said brother would have introduced me to was Beck. I’ve listened to his late-90s album Mutations all week simply happy that my own musical instincts gradually led me to his catalogue.
Well, it’s 2009, and Beck has now been on the scene for quite a while. Rather than rest on his laurels, he’s decided to take on any odd or challenging project he sees fit. We previously announced that he’s writing Charlotte Gainsbourg’s new album which will keep his musical ambitions in check. However, Beck has also managed to create one of the coolest web pages I’ve seen for any musician or band. One section, called Irrelevant Topics, sees Beck chatting it up with Tom Waits and Will Ferrell about various topics. Recently, he’s added a feature called the Record Club where Beck gathers a group of musicians to cover a classic album in one day. Previously, Beck’s cohorts tackled The Velvet Underground & Nico. Now, he’s recruited Devendra Banhart, MGMT, Binki Shapiro from Little Joy, and Brian Lebarton and Bram Inscore from his touring band to channel Songs of Leonard Cohen. The first track, “Suzanne,” has just been posted.

Bands must love making videos for songs on soundtracks. They only have to do a tenth as much work.
Of course, the majority of the video for “New Perspective,” the lead single by Panic! at the Disco from the soundtrack to the Diablo Cody-penned horror flick “Jennifer’s Body” (which is not being screened for the press, by the way), consists of singer Brendon Urie and drummer Spencer Smith, along with what we’re guessing are body doubles, walking in slo-mo through a high school. A couple cat fights break out, as the action cuts from the high school to the clips from the film, where Megan Fox and Amanda Seyfried are either fighting or making out. When Megan isn’t eating boys alive, anyway.
Truth be told, the video is not of major significance to us. What is of major significance is the fact that Panic! is literally half the band they were the last time we heard from them. Guitarist Ryan Ross and bassist Jon Welker left the band in July, citing the age-old musical differences. Urie and Smith will continue as Panic, while Ross and Welker have formed a group called the Young Veins, which will be more ’60s oriented in sound. After a quick spin of the Young Veins song “Change” on their MySpace page, the sound of “New Perspective” makes much more sense. It’s more in line with the band’s debut album, A Fever You Can’t Sweat Out, in that it’s wordy and contemporary. Does that mean Ross and Welker were the brains behind Pretty. Odd, the band’s Beatleriffic sophomore album? And was their departure due to insistence by Urie and Smith that they ditch the retro stuff because it didn’t sell as well?
Personally, we can’t help but think the answer to that last question is ‘yes,’ because the first thing Urie and Smith did after Ross and Welker left the band was put that goddamn exclamation point back into their name. Sigh.
