DMed’s Video of the Week: New Pornographers, “My Rights Versus Yours”

Curiously, the New Pornographers have not made any videos for the singles from their new album Challengers (or not yet, anyway). This is a shame, because for a bunch of somewhat nerdy Canucks, they have made some fabulous videos, from the cross-dressers in “Sing Me Spanish Techno” to the smokin’ hot blond in “The Laws Have Changed.” So I had to settle for their performance of “My Rights Versus Yours” on David Letterman’s show, and while it’s a good performance, why on earth is there only one close-up of Neko Case, the best looking member of the band? There should be a law against that sort of thing.

The Brit-Brit 2007 VMA performance

OK, so here is Britney’s terrible VMA “performance” of “Gimme More” at this years Video Music Awards. There are a ton of other videos up at YouTube now postulating “proof” on why it was so bad (the most famous one being that one of her heels broke), as well as the weird Chris Crocker freakout/defense of Britney video. But whatever the reason, one thing is for sure. It stinks. The lip synching, the outfit, the whole vibe in general is just one of defeat. Enjoy, then. It never gets old.

DMed’s Video of the Week: Encore, “All Through the Night”

A publicist friend sent this my way, and I’ve had a stupid grin on my face ever since. If you came of age in the late ’70s, you will totally appreciate this video, which takes a TV show that’s near and dear to the hearts of late thirtysomethings everywhere, and brilliantly re-edits it to sync up to Encore’s discotastic “All Through the Night.” Sweeeet.

DMed’s Video of the Week: The Holloways, “Dancefloor”

At long last, the debut from the Holloways, So This Is Great Britain?, drops on these here shores. I was particularly excited about hearing the rest of the album, as my July 10 love letter for their song “Generator” will attest. Well, I finally heard it, and…sigh.

Let me be clear about that sigh. There is actually some magnificent stuff on the album. They just can’t keep up the pace for the entire record. But the stuff that’s good is damn good, like this little ditty called “Dancefloor.” Plus, the video is about as Bullz-Eye friendly as they come.
