Soundies = the precursor of the music video

There’s a show airing on PBS stations around the country right about now that every music fan should check out, particularly if you enjoy history as well. It’s called “Soundies,” and its topic is stated outright in its title.

Soundies were, as the title of this post indicates, the precursor of the music video. The Mills Novelty Company created a refrigerator-sized machine called the Panoram, which was essentially a video jukebox, and these soundies – three-minute films of various musical artists performing their hit songs – could be watched on the Panoram in groups of three. (It was early technology, of course, so you couldn’t fast-forward or rewind; if you wanted to see the last soundie on the reel, you were stuck watching the first two as well, whether you wanted to or not.) The soundies began in 1940 and started off as a roaring success, but World War II caused the Panoram business to stumble – the war effort necessitated a slowing in the manufacturing of new machines – and by the time the armistice had been signed, it was too late; the era of the soundies was over by 1946.

But, wow, who knew how many video artifacts from those six years were still out there…?

Fans of jazz, country, pop vocalists of the ’40s, and even early R&B will find their jaws dropping at some of this footage. You’ll see performances from Duke Ellington, Cab Calloway, Count Basie, Les Paul, Kay Starr, Fats Waller, Spike Jones, the Mills Brothers, Merle Travis, Louis Armstrong, Nat King Cole, Doris Day, and even a young Liberace. The stock line about soundies is that while the most popular white artists tended to be under contract to other studios and were therefore unavailable to make soundies (there’s an interesting story about how Mel Torme’s group, the Meltones, did a soundie with another member lip-synching Mel’s vocals because Torme himself wasn’t contractually permitted to appear on camera), there were plenty of black artists who were more than willing to get in front of the camera in order maximize their exposure…and it’s so awesome that they did. Actually being able to see Fats Waller kick out the jams on the piano is pretty damned sweet.

There are also some interesting choices of talking heads brought onboard to discuss the soundies; in addition to new interviews with some of the folks who actually made them, like Les Paul and Kay Starr, we get commentary from Joe Franklin, Hugh Hefner, jazzmen George Duke and Wynton Marsalis, and…Stan Ridgway? Oh, it’s not so strange; didn’t you know that he recorded an album of standards a few years back? (If not, you will soon…when we discuss The Best Albums You’ve Never, Ever Heard. Check back at Bullz-Eye in early April!)

You can check out the official website for “Soundies,” but I’m led to understand that in addition to future airings, there’s talk of releasing it on DVD. Fingers crossed that that’s true; there’s a lot of stuff here that’s worth watching over and over again.

American Idol: The Guys Revert Back to Mediocre

You would have thought the dude contestants remaining on “American Idol” have learned something.
Last week, for the most part, they stepped up their game. But last night almost all of them reverted back to two weeks ago when they played it safe and bored the crap out of America. Some of the judges even admitted that only three or four of these guys deserve to be in the top 12. Of course, six of them will be, because that’s how the show is set up. But more bland performances will mean early exits for all of these guys.

Before we get started on last night’s recap, Ryan Seacrest said there is a big announcement coming Thursday. What, that he is a douchebag? We already knew that. Just keep sucking up to the sponsors, Ryan…and we’ll all be on the edge of our seats. Also, Season 4 champ and country mega-star Carrie Underwood will perform on Thursday night, and America will get a glimpse of just how much better Stephanie, Lakisha, Melinda and Sabrina are than her. I just hope they don’t have Underwood dolled up in the same southern-suburban-mom-with-fake-boobs look they gave Kellie Pickler.

On to last night….

THE GOOD

Chris Sligh closed out the night, and even though it was like a 7 out of 10, he was still better than every other dude. Randy admitted that it was not his favorite performance of Chris’ but that it was the best vocal of the night, Paula said the same thing, and Simon said it sounded like Chris was shouting toward the end. All true, but this guy is safe and is one of the few guys who deserves to be in the top 12.

Blake Lewis kicked off the show with 311’s “All Mixed Up” which effectively showcased his beat-boxing, vocals and showmanship all at once. Still, this wasn’t Blake’s best showing either. Randy said it was hot, Paula said it was interesting, and Simon said he didn’t understand a word of it but that Blake continues to stand out. It was pretty funny that both Randy and Paula admitted to not knowing the song.

I hesitate to put Brandon Rogers in this class, because I know he can do better than his version of Rare Earth’s “Celebrate,” but he was still better than at least five other guys. Randy said it was solid, Paula said it was phenonmenal (that’s a stretch), and Simon said he was nervous for Brandon because he’s just not as memorable as the girls. Well, that’s true to a point, but he’s still better than most of the guys.

THE IN-BETWEEN

Chris Richardson took a step back last night when he put his own spin on a Keith Urban tune. Randy thought it was good and Paula thought it was cool and a unique song choice. Simon said it was good but not the best vocal of the night. This kid really blew it out last week and this performance was just bland by comparison.

Jared Cotter sang Stevie Wonder’s “If You Really Love Me” and it really was not bad. But I can’t get this out of my head, the fact that Jared is no more than a really good karaoke singer. Paula even said that Jared needs to work on his “shouting,” and Simon said it wasn’t very original. I think this dude is in danger of going home, especially if those idiots who vote for the worst keep Sanjaya in one more week.

Sundance Head really annoys me. I mean, I’m just waiting for him to spontaneously combust on national TV. They talked about him crying for votes last week when contestants were eliminated…in fact, Simon called him out on it and I can’t say I disagree. Sundance sang Pearl Jam’s “Jeremy” and it was like a wedding band performance. Randy said it fit with Sundance’s “Southern rock” vibe…..what??
Randy, did you miss the whole modern rock movement of the nineties? You don’t know who 311 is or what genre Pearl Jam is in? Simon said it wasn’t as good as last week, that Sundance reminded him of a bar singer. Exactly. But somehow America loves this guy. I don’t get it.

THE BAD

My wife doesn’t agree with me on this, but I think Phil Stacy really sucked last night and could be on his way out. Phil attempted at LeAnn Rimes tune…..dude, have you not noticed that you have balls in your shorts? Anyway, he was all over the place and was wearing this hat that looked ridiculous. Randy said Phil has problems with his lower register and Paula said it wasn’t a good song choice. Simon said he didn’t get it, and the whole hat/big eyes thing was distracting too. I just know that Simon doesn’t like bald guys, period. But still, Phil was awful after a week in which I had him pegged as one of the best guys. It remains to be seen if his earlier performances can keep him in this thing.

Sanjaya was the worst as usual, singing John Mayer’s “Waiting On the World to Change.” Not only was it a boring song choice, but this kid gets worse every week. His performance was so uninspiring I literally stopped paying attention. Randy said dude hasn’t returned to the form of his early auditions, Paula said all the other guys are better and Simon said it wasn’t as “ghastly” as last week but that more than that, it wasn’t a good vocal and this is a singing competition. Unfortunately I’ve seen America screw up with this kid two weeks in a row and so I can’t say they will get it right this week, either.

So there you have it. I think Sanjaya and Phil should go home but I just don’t trust the voters. So I think it’s going to be Jared and Phil, or possibly Brandon. For you people who keep voting for Sanjaya, keep looking at yourself in the mirror and repeat these words: “William Hung.” When the image haunts you enough, come to your senses and vote for the real singers in this thing.

The ladies go tonight and I just know at least four of them are going to bring the house down. And I know they won’t bore me like the guys did. See you all tomorrow….

Bestival is setting up its lineup for what it calls “three days and three nights of music and merry mayhem” and that you can expect “hoe downs, high times, tea cakes, techno, folk and everything in between.” Sounds like a few days of music, smelly people and drugs to me. Announced headliners for the September 7-9 festival are The Chemical Brothers and the Beastie Boys.

American Idol: No Real Surprises

So tonight’s “American Idol” results show featured a group performance that was slightly better than last week, but still typically annoying. The group did “Joy To the World” and all I could think is that Sundance Head is one big bullfrog.

Then the guys were lined up and as always, Ryan Seacrest sent them back to the pack one by one:
Phil, Chris Sligh, Sundance (ugg), Blake and Jared all were safe. The first to go? Nick Pedro. Looks like America didn’t “Vote for Pedro” as he had pleaded for them to. Simon reiterated that Nick is a good singer but lacked charisma, and in the end that’s what did him in.

Then the girls were up. Staying in Hollywood: Stephanie, Gina, Sabrina, and Melinda (duh!). Then Alaina was sent packing. This wasn’t a huge surprise to most people, but it was somewhat humorous to watch Alaina try to sing her way out while crying. She literally could not get the words out.

Then we were treated to a performance by one of last season’s finalists, Kellie Pickler. Kellie has been turned into a country star and announced that she was going to be touring in support of her gold album, supporting Brad Paisley. Also in attendance were Kellie’s new boobs…..I mean, how could you miss those things? I don’t remember them last season, so either they are a gift from her record label or she was just pushing them out from the inside. Also, her dress and hairstyle made her look ten years older than she is. Maybe fifteen. It’s like Nashville decided they wanted to turn Kellie into a Brentwood soccer mom. (those of you who don’t live in Nashville, insert some ritzy suburb in for Brentwood). And her performance made me think that her and Carrie Underwood would both be completely outclassed by at least four of this season’s females.

Then it was back to business. Chris Richardson and Brandon were safe, leaving Sunjaya and AJ. Judging by Tuesday’s performances, everyone was pretty sure Sunjaya would be going home, most of all Sunjaya. But it was AJ. I’m almost sure Sunjaya bought a non-refundable plane ticket home yesterday and he was thinking of how he was going to get the show to reimburse him. Randy and Paula thought the voters were wrong, and I don’t disagree completely, but I do think Sunjaya was way worse than AJ and Nick.

Then it was the girls’ turn again. Lakisha and Haley were safe, and Ryan asked Antonella, Leslie and Jordin to come out front. Antonella was sent back, surprising pretty much everyone in the world. But once that happened, you had to know it would be Leslie. And it was. I mean, Jordin is too loveable to be sent home this early. So Leslie sang and right as the credits were rolling she changed her lyrics to “I knew I shouldn’t have done the scat thing”….pretty funny Leslie, now enjoy the rest of your career. Seriously, she’s not that bad, just kind of weird.

So Nick, AJ, Alaina and Leslie all went home tonight. We all know that despite their awful vocal ability, Sunjaya and Antonella keep getting votes, but at the end of the day no one should be surprised at the outcome tonight. Everyone that went home was vulnerable.

Another week, and now we’re down to 16. After next week we’re down to the final 12. Where is the time going? We’re all having way too much fun, aren’t we? Well, not nearly as much fun as Kellie Pickler’s boobs. See y’all next week!

American Idol: Not Quite Measuring Up To Last Week

Last night the girls had a chance to show their stuff again on “American Idol.” With the guys improving just a bit it was going to be interesting to see how they responded. Some of them did respond, but most were off the mark from last week, mainly because they set the bar extremely high for themselves.

Here is the recap….

THE VERY GOOD

Melinda Doolittle is REALLY REALLY good. If anyone took it up a notch last night, it was her, and she established herself as a frontrunner. Singing “My Funny Valentine,” Melinda proved that she is in a completely different league than just about everyone else in this competition. I’m getting goose bumps just thinking about that performance. Randy said Melinda is “in it to win it,” Paula said it was “astounding,” and Simon said that it was incredible and that he doesn’t think Melinda knows how good she is. Amen to that. Not only is she awesome, she’s humble.

THE GOOD

Since Melinda kind of blurred the line this week, it was slightly harder to judge the 3 categories. But here were the other good performances…

Lakisha Jones did Gladys Knight’s “Midnight Train to Georgia” and it wasn’t as good as last week’s effort, but still near the top of all of them last night. Randy said Lakisha seemed nervous, Paula loved it and Simon said she is a phenonmenal singer but didn’t act like it this week.

Stephanie Edwards did Beyonce’s “Dangerously In Love” and it was a bit dangerous of an attempt. I mean, this is Beyonce we’re talking about. Randy said it was like “Beyonce lite” and I kind of agreed with him, but Paula and Simon both thought it was great. Stephanie isn’t going anywhere.

Sabrina took on a Whitney Houston song and while she wasn’t quite as good as last week either, she was still awesome. Randy said Sabrina has a “big voice,” Paula labeled her a “contender,” and Simon said it was very good but that Sabrina was almost shouting the song. She is also not going anywhere soon either.

THE IN-BETWEEN

Gina Glockson was stuffed into this red dress like a sausage, and sang Heart’s “Alone” kind of pitchy and all over the place. She has a strong voice, but she’s really getting on my nerves. Randy said it was a good song choice but pitchy, and Simon said it sounded forced and that we’re not really sure who the “real” Gina is yet. We might not have a chance to find out, either. But here’s the kicker….after Gina dedicated her performance to her boyfriend, Ryan Seacrest asked how long they had been dating and she said two years. So Seacrest shouts out to Gina’s boyfriend on national TV, “Dude, time for the ring.”
Ryan, you can’t do something like that on national TV…..there’s got to be a man-law about it! I feel so bad for that poor guy, and not just because of who he’s dating.

Haley Scarnato sang Whitney’s “Queen of the Night” and it was way better than last week, but still not enough to inch her toward the top. Randy thought the band drowned Haley out and wondered if it was on purpose, Paula said it was better than last week, and Simon said she got an “A” for effort but that she is vulnerable this week.

Jordin Sparks was also pretty good but not as good as last week. Randy said she had pitchy moments but he was still impressed. Paula called her “infectious,” and Simon said Jordin has “massive potential.” I mean, she’s only 17. Jordin will likely stick around a bit. And may I please shout out to her dad, Phillippi Sparks, who was in the audience? Dude was a New York Football Giant!

THE BAD

Alaina Alexander sang the Dixie Chicks’ “Not Ready To Make Nice” and she was kind of pitchy and shouting. Randy said as much, and Paula said Alaina picked a hard song. Simon likened it to Randy Jackson running a 100-meter spring, that she kind of ran out of gas and was straining throughout the song. Alaina is in real danger of going home this week.

Antonella took on Celine Dion and was, like everyone would expect, all over the place. She just doesn’t measure up in this competition and her looks and Internet photos will only get her so far. Hell, the latter may just get her kicked off this week. Randy said Antonella is gorgeous but picked the wrong song, Paula said it was better than last week and Simon said he thought it was worse than last week. This girl has got to be going home, though nothing surprises me.

Leslie, the dog walker, has a lot of potential but I can’t help but think that something is missing with her. Randy said her performance was pitchy, and Simon summed it up best when he said that Leslie is good but that she’d been “whacked” by three or four big voices that sang before her. I think Leslie sticks around one more week but she is in danger of getting the boot, too.

So my picks to go home are, for the guys: Sunjaya and Brandon. For the girls, Alaina and Antonella.
Tonight there will be a performance by last season finalist Kellie Pickler. Will she say anything dumb? Stay tuned! There should also be another horrible group performance. Can’t wait, how about you?
