The Return of the Living Dolls

I’d love to take credit for that headline, but I borrowed most of it from an album New York Dolls released in the ’80s (Night of the Living Dolls). In this case, though, it’s even more accurate now than it was then, since the last two remaining living Dolls – singer David Johansen and guitarist Sylvain Sylvain – are releasing a new album.

The line-up is fleshed out by second guitarist Steve Conte, bassist Sam Yaffa (late of Hanoi Rocks), and drummer Brian Delaney, who’d already worked with Johansen for several years prior to the Dolls reuniting for the 2003 Meltdown Festival in London, and the album is produced by Jack Douglas, who engineered the band’s debut LP back in the ’70s.

Will the record be any good…? Based on the performances the band’s been giving lately, it has a real shot at greatness…but only time will tell.

It’s a sad day for British pop fans

Martin Gilks, the original drummer for the Wonder Stuff, has died.

Gilks was also the original drummer for the Mighty Lemon Drops, but he was kicked out of the band – possibly for not cutting his hair – and found his way behind the kit for the Stuffies. When they broke up after Construction for the Modern Idiot, he moved with a few other members onto the band We Know Where You Live, then left performing in favor of music management. He did reunite with the Stuffies for their 2000 reunion gigs, then proceeded to serve as the band’s manager ’til 2004, at which point he split with the group (which wasn’t much more than Miles Hunt and Malcolm Treese, anyway). He was involved in a motorcycle accident this past weekend and died yesterday as a result of his injuries.

Sad news. Recent albums by the Stuffies haven’t been any great shakes, but, oh, how wonderful those original four albums were. If you don’t own Never Loved Elvis, your CD collection is woefully complete.

…But, sometimes, Awesome is AWESOME!

Screw Lollapalooza, man. This is the festival to attend.

Seriously, you find me any other non-charity event in the last decade to have a line-up that features this many awesome acts. I’m willing to listen. Any festival that includes Depeche Mode, Echo and the Bunnymen, Franz Ferdinand, Morrissey, the Strokes, the Pixies, Placebo, Madness, Scissor Sisters, Futureheads, the Editors, Beth Orton, We Are Scientists, and Babyshambles – a.k.a. Pete Doherty from the Libertines – makes me more than half-tempted to throw caution to the wind and buy two tickets to Spain, baby…

Replacements: “We’re Comin’ Out…”

“…well, maybe. Sort of. But don’t quote us on that.”

Billboard.com reports that a long-awaited Replacements reunion may be in the works:

“Details are scant right now, but Jaded Insider has heard that Replacements members Paul Westerberg, Tommy Stinson and Chris Mars recently hit the studio with session drummer Josh Freese to record some new tracks, which might just be the closest we’ll ever get to a full-on reunion from the legendary ‘Mats.”

Hey, rumor or not, any day that offers even a glimmer of hope that these boys might settle their differences and record some more great music…is a very good day, indeed.
