The Mountain Goats: “This Year”

The Mountain Goats are one of the more prolific and literate bands to be described as “indie rock.” Singer John Darnielle sounds a bit like Colin Meloy (of the Decemberists), which means his voice is pleasant, if a bit nasal. This track starts off with a nice piano riff before Darnielle starts to sing about a recent roadtrip. But the chorus – “I’m going to make it through this year / if it kills me” – is what drives the song.

Like video? Love this

i dunno how long the site’s been around, but I was just introduced to it last night, so forgive me once again if I’m slightly behind the curve. But for all those of you who like interesting video clips – including an array of rare music videos – check out You Tube. At first glance it just looks like a dumping ground for kids to put up their lame homemade vids, but use the search engine and magic can happen before your eyes. I found a shitload of vintage Captain Beefheart clips, and some killer Frank Zappa vids, including one from the ’80s when he was on “Crossfire” and duked it out with some old do-gooders who would have liked nothing more than to have Prince’s “Darlin’ Nikki” banished forever. I miss Frank. The man wwas always ahead of his time, and that appearance just furthered the notion more. Anyway, You Tube allows users to upload videos as well (making sure to mention that they not upload any “copyrighted material,” but alas this is what the site thrives on. You just have to cover your ass anymore. Another fine way to kill evn more hours online.

It’s neither a bird nor a plane…

…but it IS Captain Video.

Not the guy from ’50s sci-fi TV with the cardboard sets and props that even kids with really great imaginations had trouble believing were real. No, this guy takes videos from the ’80s and gives them a scene-by-scene onceover, with hysterical results.

You’ll be checking back for updates on a regular basis, trust me…

Anyone who lampoons Zip Zap Rap is a friend of mine

Entertainment Weekly sang the praises for this vid a few weeks ago, and rightly so. Morningwood, the latest It Band from New York, has made one of the funniest, most clever videos you’re likely to see all year in “Nth Degree,” with the members of the band imitating album covers both classic (Kraftwerk, Ramones) and ghastly (click here if you haven’t seen the now-famous ‘worst album covers ever’ page). This is funny, funny stuff. The song is pretty catchy, too.

Another Starship turd

It’s great to have VH1 Classic and be able to see all the truly awful videos that were made in the ’80s. Take, for example, the clip for Starship’s “Laying It On The Line,” won’t you? If the video for “We Built This City” was bad, then this one is truly craptastic. In it, the band tries to look topical once again by having images of exploding atom bombs superimposed over their faces. Some big, fat greasy dude with a beard and dressed in a helmet that says “US Support” or “UN Support” or something like that and walking around in camo has a bumnch of soldiers on a chain leash in a jungle. They shoot rocket launchers and other weapons. Lead singer Mickey Thomas cavorts around in his gay moustache while also dressed in a helmet with ’80s spandex bimbos clinging to his arms. Grace Slick tries to convince herself she’s still a viable entity in the band. She has weird uber-fashion makeup smeared across her eyes. There are shots of dudes on ATVs riding around. It’s totally awesome.

In the meantime, there’s also plenty of room for the token guitar solo shot with a shrederrific jagged guitar on full display. Mix this all together with some “on stage” shots, and you have one hell of a video. I don’t know what was going on, but I know it was supposed to be Big. If one thing is clear after watching this video, it’s that the cocaine ’80s sure were some goofy times when it came to video storyboards. I did a little search on Starship, and I notice that Mickey Thomas’ website is named “Starship Featuring Mickey Thomas.” Yep, those county fair circuit days are calling, Mick.
