U2: 18 Singles (an alternate tracklist)

As I recently reviewed U2’s 18 Singles – a collection hoping to tap into the kind of success that The Beatles 1 had a few years ago – it occurred to me that I could put together a better 18-song playlist. Remember, I’m going for the band’s hits; so bigger in this case is probably better.

First, I must identify the “must-haves.” Here is my list: “Angel of Harlem,” “Beautiful Day,” “Desire,” “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For,” “Mysterious Ways,” “One,” “Pride (In The Name of Love),” “Sunday Bloody Sunday,” “Where the Streets Have No Name” and “With or Without You.” These are the band’s signature songs. (Only “Angel of Harlem” was excluded from 18 Singles.)

Now, I need to identify the best of the rest: “All I Want Is You,” “Bad,” “Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me,” “I Will Follow,” “New Year’s Day,” “Sweetest Thing” and “Vertigo.” Are there better songs not yet mentioned? Probably, but you’d be hard-pressed to find something bigger or more popular.

That leaves room for one song. Regrettably, I’m only choosing amongst the singles, so personal favorites like “In a Little While,” “Hawkmoon 269,” “So Cruel” or “A Sort of Homecoming” do not qualify. Nor does “Flower Child,” an All That You Can’t Leave Behind castoff that I’m utterly convinced would be a huge hit for the band if they would only release it as a single.

Looking at the list of the band’s singles, “Discotheque,” “Staring at the Sun,” “Numb” and “Stay (Farwaway, So Close!)” jump out. Of the four, the last two didn’t chart as well as the first two, so the final spot goes to either “Discotheque” or “Staring at the Sun.” Listening to each as I keep my criteria in mind, I can envision the band opening a concert with “Discotheque.” “Staring at the Sun”? Not so much.

So here’s the final 18-song tracklist, in chronological order:

1. I Will Follow
2. New Year’s Day
3. Sunday Bloody Sunday
4. Pride (In the Name of Love)
5. Bad
6. Where the Streets Have No Name
7. I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For
8. With or Without You
9. Desire
10. Angel of Harlem
11. All I Want Is You
12. Mysterious Ways
13. One
14. Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me
15. Discotheque
16. Sweetest Thing
17. Beautiful Day
18. Vertigo

How’s it look?

I may have finally figured out why I can understand the Scottish brogue so well.

I had forgotten that I was exposed to it at an early age until I checked out Mark Evanier’s consistently enjoyable blog, News From Me, and read an entry where he reminisces about his days as a writer on “The Bay City Rollers Show.”

Evanier comments on how it used to run in a really early timeslot that didn’t exist in all NBC markets, and he’s right; I remember that I’d only catch it if I happened to wake up really early…like, 6:30 AM…on Saturday mornings. (That was back in the days when you could start at 6:30 and have something great to watch straight on through to “American Bandstand.”) He also recollects that “it was actually a fun show to do if you could get past the fact that the most of the Rollers had such natural thick Scottish accents that American audiences could never have understood them. A dialogue coach named Jonathan Lucas worked wonders with the lads but by their own admission, they weren’t equipped to host a show of this sort. It was kind of like: Forget about comedic delivery. Let’s be happy if they just get the words out clean.”

Check out this brief clip of the opening and closing of the show; there’s just enough dialogue for you to understand what he’s talking about…

On the latest volume of the “O.C.” soundtrack…

…please to find the worst cover of the Sex Pistols’ “Pretty Vacant” since the version on Joan Jett’s 1990’s album, The Hit List.

Click here if you don’t trust me. “Oy! Oy! Oy!” Gimme a fucking break…

And, y’know, I was originally psyched at the idea of hearing this compilation, given this all-covers track listing…

Goldspot – “Float On” (Modest Mouse)
Rock Kills Kid – “I Turn My Camera On” (Spoon)
Lady Sovereign – “Pretty Vacant” (The Sex Pistols)
Mates of State – “California” (Phantom Planet)
Pinback – “Wasted” (Black Flag)
John Paul White – “Can’t Get It Out Of My Head” (ELO)
Rogue Wave – “Debaser” (The Pixies)
Syd Matters – “Hello Sunshine” (Super Furry Animals)
Tally Hall – “Smile Like You Mean It” (The Killers)
The M’s – “Come Into Our Room” (Clinic)
Band Of Horses – “The End’s Not Near” (The New Year)
Ashtar Command – “Into Dust” (Mazzy Star)

…but the Pistols cover has me on edge and disturbed at how awful some of the other tracks might be.

GYPPED!

After repeated reports that Michael Jackson would not only be making an appearance at the World Music Awards in London but also would be singing the title track from his bigger-than-God album, Thriller, he, uh, didn’t.

Oh, he showed up. He just didn’t sing “Thriller.” He did, however, favor the crowd with a few verses of the schmaltzfest that is “We Are The World,” which is, I think we can all agree, a poor, poor, pitiful substitute.

In an interview after the event, Jacko claimed it was a “misunderstanding” that led people to believe he was ever going to be singing “Thriller.” Well, damn, Mike, if you’re aware of the misunderstanding, then how ’bout you clear it up and not leave people thinking you’re going to do something that you’re not?
