News to make The Chauffeur giddy…

…not to mention the Mayor of Simpleton:

According to RememberTheEighties.com, the Human League’s “Louise” has reportedly been covered by Robbie Williams for a forthcoming Pet-Shop-Boys-produced album entitled 1974. The dance-inspired album is also said to contain a cover of Williams’ songwriting partner, Stephen Duffy’s biggest solo hit, “Kiss Me,” as well as homages to Madonna and David Bowie.

Jesus, if they could’ve worked in references to Scritti Politti, Prefab Sprout, and Tears For Fears (I’m counting Stephen Duffy as an indirect Duran Duran reference), The Chauffeur might well have passed dead away from sheer bliss.

Primal Scream fer real, yo

Primal Scream frontman Bobby Gillespie had the shit kicked out of him in an unprovoked attack last Friday. It caused him to be 12 hours late for a Top of the Pops scheduled filming. But wait,

A source said: “Bobby turned up for filming sporting two nasty-looking black eyes and a swollen nose. The band were scheduled to film their performance on Sunday morning but Bobby was in no fit state to be in front of a camera. He looked like he had taken one hell of a beating. Everyone was amazed he even turned up. It’s not easy to hold a note when your nose is broken.”

Yes, but it’s not hard at all to lip sync when anything’s broken. C’mon! I would have loved to see a beat up Gillespie miming for the cameras.

Crossing the Atlantic and coming into the Baltimore harbor…

it’s the Virgin Festival.

Based on the annual festival of the same name in the UK, this version will be held on September 23rd at the Pimlico Race Course (home of the Preakness Stakes) and is being handled by promoter Seth Hurwitz, who books for Merriweather Post Pavilion as well as Washington, DC’s famed 9:30 Club.

Currently listed for the show’s line-up are the Who (okay, the Two, since it’s only Daltrey and Townshend these days), the Red Hot Chili Peppers, the Killers, Gnarls Barkley, the Flaming Lips, the Raconteurs, Keane, Scissor Sisters, Thievery Corporation, New Pornographers, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Wolfmother, Drive-By Truckers, Kasabian, and others yet to be announced. It’s really quite a “Who’s Who” of today’s modern rock, plus one of the bands who helped influence probably half the artists on the bill.

Tickets are $95…plus the inevitable service charge, of course…but, hell, with a line-up like that, who’s going to argue with the pricetag?
