I understand the McDonald’s in Bahrain is hiring…

Since he apparently can’t get work in the States (though he can, at least, get arrested, ho, ho), Michael Jackson is reportedly looking to score a gig as a consultant with a Bahrain-based company that plans to set up theme parks and music academies in the Middle East.

(The article can be found here.)

Oh, yeah, and he claims that the single he’s been recording for the Katrina victims for, like, MONTHS – which is entitled “I Have This Dream” and features guest appearances from Keisha Cole, Ciara, Snoop Dogg, Babyface and R. Kelly – is gonna be released on a Bahranian label…eventually.

Maybe MJ should take a cue from the folks over at the War Child organization, who can get charity albums recorded and released in in a week’s time.

Their purple prose just gives them away…

I don’t watch nearly as much TV as I used to, so this might well have been tackled in the past, but can I just say that I finally saw the Kraft commercial that morphs EMF‘s “Unbelievable” into a jingle for their new cheese crumbles, which are…

…wait for it…

crumb-believable.

I know, I know, it’s only EMF, and they could probably do with the money. And it’s not like they knew anything about it, really. (If you check their website, as of January 8th, they still hadn’t even seen the commercial themselves, although someone did manage to provide them with the above link to watch it online.) But, criminey, guys…crumb-believable? Ugh.

Closing note: Despite this incredibly unabashed example of selling out, EMF nonetheless continues to retain my eternal respect for having introduced me to the Stooges’ “Search and Destroy,” which I’d never heard until they covered it on their “Unexplained” EP.

Introducing “Pet Sounds” to the next generation

Some of you may remember when I posted awhile back about how I was playing music to get my daughter to sleep. Well, it appears that I’ve found the perfect album…and, what a surprise, it’s an album that I already knew was perfect: the Beach Boys’ Pet Sounds. The one-two-three punch of “Wouldn’t It Be Nice,” “You Still Believe In Me,” and “That’s Not Me” is so powerfully soothing that, by the fourth track, she’s put her head on my shoulder, sound asleep. I’ve been using it as her bedtime soundtrack for a week now, and, even on her worst night, I’ve still never gotten to hear my favorite song on the album (and one of my favorites of all time), “God Only Knows,” which is track #9.

Fortunately, she still gets to hear it; I put the disc on “repeat.”

Sock hop at Giant Eagle

This probably happens to people from every generation at some point, but I was absolutely rocking at the Giant Eagle grocery store earlier today when I was shopping. Among the songs I heard:

“A Little Respect,” Erasure
“Cars,” Gary Numan
“Lessons in Love,” Level 42
“Some Like It Hot,” Power Station

There was a point where I would cringe whenever I heard a song I liked in a supermarket or drug store (the time I heard Split Enz’s “One Step Ahead” Muzak style at a Walgreens was almost too much to bear). I’m over it now. I felt like dancing down the aisles while these songs were playing. Though I admit I looked at the 70-year-olds and wondered what they thought of it all, knowing that someday, that will be me, while some sorry-ass Lifehouse song is playing and all I want to do is swallow the end of a double barrel shotgun and end the pain once and for all.

But for now, I’m dancing.
