Because too much Simon Cowell is never enough…

…his prolific production company is now bringing us “Celebrity Duets,” featuring the likes of Cyndi Lauper, Smokey Robinson, and Macy Gray…but also Kenny Loggins, Dionne Warwick, and confirmed ass clown Michael Bolton. Each singer will be paired with a celebrity NOT known for his or her singing ability, and the matchups will change each week.

The show will begin airing on Fox the evening of August 29…make plans to either record or avoid it accordingly.

No wardrobe malfunctions, please

Budding graphic designers, take note: Janet Jackson wants you to design the cover for her new album, “20 Years Old,” to be released September 26.

According to Yahoo:

The Design Me contest requires participants to download images of Janet, create proposed album covers, and to post the creations on the contest page. Contestants will vote for their favorite submissions, and Janet will select her top four favorites, which will be used for the first one million copies of the album.

Sounds great, huh? Well, okay, there’s also this tiny bit of fine print:

Each Grand Prize winner will receive an autographed copy of his/her design for his/her personal, private use only and not for resale and winning design will appear in selected publicly distributed copies of Janet Jackson “20 Years Old” CD, subject to the Sponsor’s absolute right not to use one or more winning designs on any copies for any reason in its sole discretion.

So, Janet might use your winning design, if she feels like it, unless she doesn’t want to.

But still: a pretty cool opportunity, if you’re good with PhotoShop…

“Because you flirt shamelessly with another woman on national TV, THAT’S why!”

Add Carmen Electra and Dave Navarro to Hollywood’s ever-growing list of celebrities who are back on the market. Despite pledging their eternal love on MTV’s “Til Death Do Us Part” reality show in 2003 (a guaranteed pox on marital bliss, as a couple of folks named Simpson and Lachey will attest), Electra and Navarro are separating.

No reason has been given for the split…though fans of “Rock Star: INXS” will recall several suspiciously long camera shots of Navarro eyeing co-host Brooke Burke’s suspiciously long, bare legs…

Tommy Lee wants you in his pants

Who’s got the looks that kill? Turns out it’s not Motley Crue frontman Vince Neil; it’s drummer Tommy Lee. Lee is in the process of launching a new clothing line, dubbed People’s Liberation for Tommy Lee — or “PL for TL” for short:

The limited PL for TL line will mostly consist of jeans, T-shirts and hats for men and women, with imagery from the rocker’s many tattoos reflected throughout the graphics and detailing. The jeans, which come in skinny, straight-leg, super-low, and boot-cut styles, feature back-pocket images that include a skull wearing a top hat, a dragon, a lotus flower and a koi fish as well as Lee’s signature.

The fashion line will launch at Bloomingdale’s stores and specialty boutiques nationwide beginning in September, and an optimistic buyer for Bloomies predicts a sellout. Should that happen, those who miss out on Tommy’s jeans will have to console themselves with a pair from Buddy Lee instead.

Is Geddy Lee missing an opportunity here, perhaps?

The Postal Service always rings twice

Good news for fans of Death Cab for Cutie frontman Ben Gibbard’s side project, The Postal Service: a new album is in the works.

Gibbard and his collaborator, producer Jimmy Tamborello, have only recently begun working on songs for their second Postal Service album. As a result of Death Cab’s extensive touring schedule throughout 2006, Gibbard and Tamborello have altered their mode of correspondence this time around: While their debut album, “Give Up” was created entirely by sending tracks back and forth to one another via snail mail, their sophomore effort will rely upon email communication at least until Death Cab’s current tour is finished.

As busy as Gibbard is these days, we probably can’t expect the new Postal Service record until well into 2007. In the meantime, if you’re not familiar with their work, click here to sample key singles from the first album: “Such Great Heights,” “We Will Become Silhouettes,” and “The District Sleeps Alone Tonight.”
