Anyone who lampoons Zip Zap Rap is a friend of mine

Entertainment Weekly sang the praises for this vid a few weeks ago, and rightly so. Morningwood, the latest It Band from New York, has made one of the funniest, most clever videos you’re likely to see all year in “Nth Degree,” with the members of the band imitating album covers both classic (Kraftwerk, Ramones) and ghastly (click here if you haven’t seen the now-famous ‘worst album covers ever’ page). This is funny, funny stuff. The song is pretty catchy, too.

Sock hop at Giant Eagle

This probably happens to people from every generation at some point, but I was absolutely rocking at the Giant Eagle grocery store earlier today when I was shopping. Among the songs I heard:

“A Little Respect,” Erasure
“Cars,” Gary Numan
“Lessons in Love,” Level 42
“Some Like It Hot,” Power Station

There was a point where I would cringe whenever I heard a song I liked in a supermarket or drug store (the time I heard Split Enz’s “One Step Ahead” Muzak style at a Walgreens was almost too much to bear). I’m over it now. I felt like dancing down the aisles while these songs were playing. Though I admit I looked at the 70-year-olds and wondered what they thought of it all, knowing that someday, that will be me, while some sorry-ass Lifehouse song is playing and all I want to do is swallow the end of a double barrel shotgun and end the pain once and for all.

But for now, I’m dancing.

Nellie McKay: Say hello, wave goodbye

Remember that bit from a few weeks ago when Nellie McKay had what appeared to be a nervous breakdown onstage while describing her failed marriage to Sony? Well, Sony’s lawyer handed Nellie the divorce papers this week, when her second album Pretty Little Head was supposed to be released.

Where McKay goes from here is uncertain, but after well-publicized, tempestuous affairs with Aimee Mann, George Michael, Michael Jackson, Fiona Apple and now McKay, Sony is said to be considering psychiatric counseling in order to learn why they find themselves endlessly drawn to the wildly creative but slightly batshit types.

Those little stick figure cartoon kids put on a damn good live show

This is pretty sweet. The Gorillaz played five shows in Manchester, complete with a monster clip show assembled by Jamie “Murdoc” Hewlett and including De La Soul (doing their “Feel Good, Inc.” bit). To listen to the live show and watch the superbly synchronized clip show, click here. You’ll be happy. You’ll be feelin’ glad. Sunshine in a bag, however, is entirely up to you.
