The 80s sounds still rule

With all the holiday parties, it was cool hearing a ton of 80s music. That sound will always be popular with parties, just like the Motown sound has survived through the years. But it’s not just the music. You’re seeing more pop artists these days mimic the look as well with popstar’s 80s costumes. This retro look has become very popular when people dress up for costume parties, but the wild and crazy look of the 80s still reappears with today’s pop stars.

Katy Perry is a great example, as the sound of many of her songs along with her crazy looks on the red carpet and in her video harks back to the colored hair Eighties. Watch the Friday Night video and then watch old Cindy Lauper videos. The comparison is more than valid.

With her incredible popularity, the Katy Perry look is now showing up often at parties, along with crazy 80s costumes. Of course over the holidays we saw many lovely ladies in a Christmas fancy dress, but as New Year’s Eve rolled around we saw more and more outrageous looks. With the economy improving we might see a return of even more of these looks. The economy boomed in the Eighties and the colorful looks and big hair reflected the party mood of the times.

So crank up a mix tape of Katy Perry and your favorites Eighties bands, put on a wild costume and throw a massive party!

Big Plans for Van Halen in 2012

It’s not quite geezer rock, but Van Halen with original front man David Lee Roth is definitely a blast from the past. But in today’s fragmented music scene, the older legends still command plenty of attention as they can attract both older fans and young kids to sell out arenas and stadiums. That’s even more true overseas.

We don’t know all their plans for 2012, but it looks like Van Halen is gearing up for a big year that will feature a new album along with a monster tour. According to Rolling Stone they are planning a sneak peak this week:

Journalists across New York have been invited to a Van Halen concert at the Cafe Wha? in Greenwich Village this Thursday. Though nothing is official, word is the band are going to perform a 45-minute set. The group hasn’t played in public since the end of their 2007/’08 reunion tour with original frontman David Lee Roth, though they have been rehearsing for their upcoming world tour at the Roxy in Los Angeles for the past few months. A new album is in the works, and a new image released by the band has the date 2.7.12 on it. A new video and single is expected to hit sometime this month. The tour goes on sale January 10th.

Van Halen will definitely be one of the touring acts that gets a lot of buzz in 2012 and you can get concert tickets here and see who will be touring. Roger Waters is another classic rocker who will be jamming venues in 2012. Hopefully it will be a great year for concert fans.

More mobile music

Smartphones and tablet computers dominated the holiday gift season, so more and more people will now have mobile gadgets that give them access to their music. Of course Apple was one of the winners, as the iPhone and the iPad were huge hits. Also, younger kids expect gifts like the iPod Touch if they can’t get the more expensive items.

Then you have the emergence of Amazon with the Kindle Fire. It didn’t get the best reviews, but at $199 it was an incredibly popular gift this year. The good thing for Amazon is that it brought a host of new people over to their ecosystem to sell them music, books, movies and TV shows. This makes them a real competitor to Apple and the iTunes store.

Amazon has tons of older customers who have been buying eBooks for years through older Kindles. Not they can market music and games to them as well. This will also drive more online gaming, even with older users who like things like bingo and poker over games kids like. New smartphones and tablets like the Kindle Fire will make it easier for them to play bingo online, or to download their favorite songs.

The landscape out there for digital content and entertainment just keeps changing. The music industry now has Pandora and Spotify competing with iTunes. It will be interesting to see how iTunes holds up with these new trends and without Steve Jobs.
