The Arcade Fire: “Cold Wind”

In an earlier post, I recommended Sia’s “Breathe Me,” which I first heard on the final episode of “Six Feet Under.” That song is also on the Six Feet Under, Vol. 2: Everything Ends soundtrack. Another fine song on the disc is “Cold Wind” by The Arcade Fire. Normally, artists provide throwaway tracks for these sountrack collections, but “Cold Wind” is a track that would easily be in the top 5 songs on the band’s breakthrough, Funeral. The first two minutes are appropriately somber, with Win Butler’s vocals set against an acoustic guitar, but the track breaks out at the 2:11 mark with a “hey hey hey!” If you liked Funeral, find this track.

Ike Reilly Assassination: “I Will Let You Down”

Ike Reilly must be sick of love songs. There can be no other reasonable explanation as to why this track exists. Released on the band’s latest album, Junkie Faithful [Bullz-Eye Review], this song is the anti-love song. Whereas most songs talk about how people are going to be there for one another, forever, this song warns the listener that they will surely be disappointed.

It’s got a great, catch Wilco feel accentuated by Reilly’s updated-Bob Dylan vocals. This is addictive stuff.

Sock hop at the Giant Eagle: The sequel

My next visit to Giant Eagle produced “In Between Days” from the Cure. When I told the checkout girl how much I enjoyed their music, she agreed, but also mentioned that they receive tons of complaints about it, too. Huh. I suppose I’ll be complaining too, when they’re subjecting me to Blessid Union of Souls, Lifehouse, and Marcy Playground.

Turns out I’m not the only one who feels this way about supermarket pop.

Give your mp3 player some good drugs

Some of ye might be well aware of this site, but for those who aren’t in the know, you can literally spend hours getting lost in the mp3 section of WFMU’s Beware of the Blog site (as well as the site in general). Tons and tons of oddball mp3s, rare albums shared in their entirety, and lots more. If you’re looking for those really different things to hear, this is a great place to waste your days as well as fill up those iPods with all sorts of kooky things to enjoy. There are even links in there for WFMU podcasts if you want even more. This is what the Internet was made for, folks.
