A so-called summit of music festival minds has gotten together and will be bringing a new event to the U.S. this summer. The people behind Lollapalooza and Austin City Limits have teamed up with British officials behind the Reading, Leeds and Glastonbury Festivals to head up a new festival called Vineland Music Festival. The event will take place August 8-10 in Vineland, New Jersey, but no acts have been announced yet. Pop artist Kylie Minogue has apparently put her health problems behind her, and will head out on tour beginning in May 2008 in support of her tenth and latest album, X. The album has been released in the UK, but will not be available in the States until early 2008. Mr. Prolific, otherwise known as Ryan Adams, has announced West Coast tour dates along with his band The Cardinals, in support of their new EP, Follow The Lights. Earlier in 2007, Adams and his band released Easy Tiger, which Time Magazine called a “career breakthrough.” This guy just doesn’t slow down. Here are the upcoming tour dates (more…) Filed under: Rock and Pop and Alternative and Hip Hop and Concerts and News and Blues and Lollapalooza Comments: None |

Rock band Blue October had what is being called a “successful show” at Lollapalooza (exactly what does that mean at a festival with a captive audience?), and the band has added more tour dates to their upcoming fall run, including shows in New York, Chicago and Los Angeles. For a complete list of dates, check out www.blueoctoberfan.com. Pop stars The Backstreet Boys are set to release their new album, Inconsolable, on October 30, and plans are tentatively in place for a world tour in 2008, one that would have them in the States next spring or summer. Farm Aid is set for September 9 on New York’s Randall Island, and this year a special acoustic performance is planned featuring Willie Nelson, Dave Matthews and Gregg Allman. Others scheduled to perform at the annual event are Neil Young, Counting Crows and John Mellencamp. Arcade Fire is back with their second album, Neon Bible, and has added dates to their fall US tour with LCD Soundsystem. The new dates include Salt Lake City and Seattle, and all confirmed dates so far (more…) |

For those of ye who may not have kept up with our regular blogging while at Lollapalooza this year, or for those who just want a handy look back on the site, please check out our official Lollapalooza 2007 recap here. David Medsker, James Elred and myself took a lot of heat (literally) and sweat more fluid ounces than any person should just to bring you the joys and junk of the fest. I had a grand time personally even though I was beat from the heat at the end of it all. Also, see if you can spot yours truly in the second Lady Gaga photo under Saturday’s wrap up. Winner gets a congratulatory email. |

It is surely because Jason and I are in our mid to late ‘30s, but the third day of Lollapalooza is hell. They could stock it with our favorite bands (something we’ll explore in more depth in our final recap), and it would still be hard to get excited about the third day. The organizers appeared to be aware of this, and to lure people in early, they front-loaded the day with Little Miss Drunken Hipster… 2:15: Amy Winehouse, Bud Light stage 2:15: Los Campesinos!, PlayStation stage 3:30: Apostle of Hustle, PlayStation stage 4:15: Iggy and the Stooges, Bud Light stage 4:15: Kings of Leon, AT&T stage 6:15: My Morning Jacket, AT&T stage 8:00: Pearl Jam, AT&T stage Our final, much more detailed recap of the weekend’s events will hit Bullz-Eye this week. Stay tuned, if you want to know about Juliette Lewis and the return of Punky Brewster fashion. With constant cloud cover and a 15-degree drop in temperature, this was the most picture-perfect weather an all-day concert fan could possibly ask for after being burned to death the day before. And with better weather came a much better day of performances. Oh, and BE writer James Eldred assures us that Daft Punk was “fucking incredible” on Friday. Sigh,. 3:30: Motion City Soundtrack, MySpace stage 4:30: The Roots, Bud Light stage 6:30: Snow Patrol, Bud Light stage 7:30: Patti Smith, Adidas 7:30: Spoon, Myspace stage 8:30 – Interpol, Bud Light 8:30: Muse, AT&T stage Filed under: Rock and Alternative and Concerts and Songs and Artists and Lollapalooza Comments: 2 Comments |

It was near 90 and cloudless. A faint breeze blew around far too infrequently. And everything, it appeared, was much louder. The main stages aren’t in the corners this year. The AT&T stage and Bud Light stage point due north and due south, respectively…and you can hear the bands on those stages for miles. Which is fine, when the mix job is done right. When it’s not, it’s death. We were a quarter mile away from one band, and they still hurt our ears. Who’s at the mixing board, Pete Townshend? 11:30: Rock for Kids Youth Jam Band, Kidzapalooza stage 11:15: The Helicopters, Citibank stage 11:45: The Fratellis, MySpace stage 12:00: Illinois, Citibank stage 1:00: Improv Comedy: The Second City, MOTO Mindfield stage 1:30: Ted Leo and the Pharmacists, MySpace stage 2:30: Polyphonic Spree, Bud Light stage 2:30: Jack’s Mannequin, AT&T stage 3:30: Slightly Stoopid, MySpace stage …and never came back. We would like to send our deepest apologies to Daft Punk (currently playing as we post this piece), but when you’re staring down a four and a half-hour wait until the next band you give a damn about takes the stage, it’s difficult to rationalize subjecting yourself to such brutal conditions for no reason. We’re arriving a little bit later tomorrow, since there is no way we’re missing Muse and Interpol. Though Jason may require a trip to the disabled list after the wear and tear he suffered on his first day. |

Had an interesting day in terms of getting a visitor pass (the Midway kiosk was broken), and getting into the hotel (they didn’t have our names on the reservation, only the name of our fearless leader, who was in Kiev), but about six glasses of Jack Daniel’s made all of our problems go away. (As Homer Simpson will tell you, alcohol is the cause of, and solution to, all of life’s problems.) The weather forecast isn’t nearly as bad as we feared. It’s only supposed to get up to 87 degrees, which is a huge improvement over, say, the 105-degree heat of 2005. First up: the Fratellis, who hit the stage before lunch (11:45). I’m also particularly stoked to see Polyphonic Spree, and it’ll be interesting to see if LCD Soundsystem can live up to their ridiculous hype in concert. Stay tuned, kids. In the meantime, go watch Daft Punk’s videos on YouTube and start working on your robot dance. |

Dammit, I had this post all ready to go in my head, when I just looked at the site to see…Davy Medsker reported on the same band! Oh well, I’m seeing Daft Punk as well, and here is their cooler than cool appearance in an old Gap ad with Juliette Lewis (shame about how they chopped up “Digital Love,” though).

My experience with electronic acts live is pretty hit and miss. I love the Chemical Brothers, but the live versions of “Out of Control” and “Setting Sun” they played when I saw them in 1999 (Fatboy Slim was the opening act, and he KILLED) made me depressed. Where’s the big drum track? Where’s Noel? Where’s Barney? It just wasn’t right. I am seriously hoping that is not what Daft Punk is like in concert. They’re closing Lollapalooza on Friday night, and I want these guys to freaking BRING IT. And they damn well better play this song. Yours truly and the illustrious David Medsker will be heading out to Lollapalooza this year to check out some bands and write about what we heard and saw. I’m going to see some cool ones. He’s going to see some cool ones. Some of them we’re going to see together. We already have our little schedules of what we want to see ready to go. One of the bands I’m going to groove to is Yo La Tengo. It’ll be nice to see them. Here’s a video of them playing the catchy “Mr. Tough” live at a radio station.

Jason: Ho-ly shit. What the hell did I just witness? Lady Gaga came out and rocked on keyboards and vocals while Lady Starlight DJd and go-go danced on the stage! They were both scantily clad and oh so luscious. Lady Gaga’s only 20 years old and is making amazing music. Check her out!
David: Easily the biggest crowd I’ve ever seen at Lolla for a band playing this early, but the fans were rewarded for their troubles, even though the band admitted it was a tad early for them (“We’ll be good by the end of the set.”) They weren’t much to look at in terms of stage presence, but they sounded fabulous. “Chelsea Dagger” has the best drunken barroom chorus since “Tubthumping.”
