You just can’t rip on Exile or Aretha. Lest you want to appear ig’nant. I’m with him on The Beach Boys, Tom Waits, and Dylan.
That Stones record is beautiful. When I listened to my brother’s crappy vinyl copy, I thought it was great. When I finally got the CD and realized it sounded just as crappy, I upgraded it to genius.
As for dissing Aretha, apparently the author spent too much time in suburban Chuck E Cheeze’s as a little white punk playing Galaga and not enough time in church to appreciate perhaps the greatest album from one of our country’s greatest female singers. Nuff said.
I’m a longtime proponent of the “to each his own” theory of music, but the dude’s cracking on two of my all-time favorite albums (”Pet Sounds” and “Never Mind the Bollocks, Here’s the Sex Pistols”). But he does get points from me for acknowledging that Tom Waits ain’t all that…
I’ve just always been one of those people that never…and will probably never “appreciate” Pet Sounds. To me it always sounded like warmed over Muzak no matter how you slice it. There are a couple good cuts on it and I get that it was a big departure coming from The Beach Boys, but at the same time, it never sparked my imagination or excitement. It’s almost like a whole bunch of tracks to sit and kill yourself slowly to while enjoying a warm cup of cocoa or something else pleasing.
I have Pet Sounds, but will admit that I have yet to “get” it. I have Never Mind the Bollocks too, but laughed out loud at their description of the album.
Was there enough praise for Kelly Clarkson for it to be overpraised? Just sayin’.
