Kevin DuBrow, lead singer of metal band uiet Riot, was found dead in Las Vegas of undetermined causes. The singer was 52 years old. “I can’t even find the words to say,” Quiet Riot bandmate Frankie Banali said on his Web site. “Please respect my privacy as I mourn the passing and honor the memory of my dearest friend, Kevin DuBrow.”

The side of me with the dark sense of humor imagines the headline, “Metal Health Finally Drives Quiet Riot Singer to Suicide.” But the side that grew up in the ’80s and covets the autographed Quiet Riot CD cover from DuBrow and his bandmates legitimately mourns his passing. I saw them play on a quadruple bill with Enuff Z’Nuff, Warrant, and Poison, and they were the only band to come out and sign stuff without actually charging anything.
WHilst I would normally wax cynical about this, all I can think about is how I’d shoot baskets out in the driveway extra long just so I could listen to that whole record…Metal health woudn’t drive you to suicide, it “cures your craaaazeeeees,” as DuBrow put it.
I think he fell victim to the over-Timbalandaytion of the pop charts. We all may follow.
